The former mayor of Alicante and former provincial and regional leader of the Popular Party, Miguel Valor, died this Sunday at the age of 79.
Valor (Alcoy, 1945) had a great political career in the provincial and regional administration, almost always linked to culture, which culminated at the end of 2014 with his arrival as mayor of the city of Alicante after the resignation of Sonia Castedo.
The politician from Alcoy began his adventure in politics in UCD as a Sports Councilor for the Alcoy City Council from 1979 to 1983 and, later, he was a Deputy for Culture and Sports for the Provincial Council of Alicante from 1983 to 1991.
During the 90s he held the position of Provincial Secretary of the PP in Alicante, a position that he combined with that of Deputy of the Valencian Cortes.
From 1995 to 2007 he was a councilor of the Alicante City Council, Vice President of the Provincial Council and Deputy for Culture and Sports.
He was also Deputy Mayor of the Alicante City Council and Councilor for Culture (2007-2014). After Castedo's resignation, Miguel Valor was elected the new mayor with the support of his municipal group, also maintaining the positions of mayor of Culture and president of the Municipal Board of Tourism and Beaches.
The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, wanted to express, through his social networks, his condolences to the family of Miguel Valor.
“Your entire Popular Party family regrets your loss. “A great Alcoyan and defender of the culture of his province,” said Mazón.
The current mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, has also said goodbye to Valor on social networks, whom he defined as “an example as a politician.”
“Companion, good person and always the best advisor one could have,” said Barcala, who confessed to being “deeply affected” by Valor's death.
“It was a source of pride for the people of Alicante that he was their mayor and I, personally, will always appreciate the affection and respect with which he treated me,” adds Barcala in his writing.
The mayor highlights the “total dedication” of the Alcoyan politician to the service of others, highlighting his work at the head of the Culture area.
“Today we have lost a great man, from that old school, where the respect of others was earned by hard work and maintained by example,” said the Alicante mayor.
Also the president of the Alicante Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, praised Miguel Valor's career this Sunday.
“He was a great public servant from the beginning of democracy and until 2015,” said the top provincial leader, who recalled Valor's extensive political career in different administrations.
“I think that as a Culture Deputy is when he felt most comfortable. Miguel Valor laid the foundations for all the cultural and museum offerings that the province has. “He was determined to make culture available to everyone,” said Pérez, who recalled that Valor was the promoter of museums such as the Gravina Fine Arts Museum (MUBAG) or the Archaeological Museum of the province of Alicante (MARQ).
