Mercadona reorganizes its purchasing department

Mercadona, a physical supermarket and online sales company, has decided to reorganize its purchasing department, which from now on will manage the relationship with its inter-suppliers and specialist suppliers from two general directorates. As a consequence of this, Paco Espert, until now responsible for Dry Prescription, will lead the general direction of Purchasing and Dry Prescription, while Rafa Berrocal, in charge of Seafood, Fruit, Vegetable and Fresh Bread Purchasing, will assume the general direction of Purchasing Sea, Fruit, Vegetables, Oven and Ready to Eat.

This movement, once the strategies have been designed to advance on the path towards Totaler, is framed in the purpose of continuing to strengthen, from the unity of action, the relationship with the suppliers with which Mercadona collaborates and thus contribute to consolidating a unique competitive advantage based on specialization, shared leadership and trust. To this end, the company has made a significant investment effort since 2018 in the creation and training of a team made up of 1,200 people between purchasing and prescription.

Mercadona would like to thank the general directors who are now joining the new departments, as well as Josemi Fernández who has conveyed his decision to leave the company, his effort, involvement and work during these five years.

All of them have contributed to promoting this new model of specialization by product that began in 2018 with the double objective of taking the leap in quality that the Mercadona model requires and continuing to advance towards an agile, efficient and sustainable supply chain that suppliers and customers demand.

A model based on shared growth and trust

Mercadona establishes a relationship with its suppliers based on transparency and trust, in which the commitment to quality and specialization is unquestionable. This relationship pursues shared growth and guarantees maximum quality, an unbeatable price and excellent service in each product with, in addition, ethical production criteria in relation to sustainable production.

At the end of 2022, the company collaborated with 3,000 specialist product suppliers from whom it made a total purchasing volume of 23,112 million euros, 22,323 in Spain and 789 in Portugal.
