Mayors of Lleida ask for access to housing, educational offers, communications and jobs

The mayors of the six capitals of the regions of the Veguería de Ponent met this Friday in Tàrrega to address different current issues that affect the territory. The meeting focused on discussing policies that help establish young people in the territory, both in the regional capitals and in neighboring municipalities.

Among the priorities, the councilors have highlighted the need to enjoy a good educational offer, good communications, job opportunities in various sectors and, especially, access to housing so that young people between 16 and 30 years old can emancipate themselves. It has also been agreed to resume these meetings with "regularity" that serve to "seed synergies and discuss common points", said the mayor of Tàrrega, Alba Pijuan.

Apart from Pijuan, the mayor of Lleida, Félix Larrosa, participated in the meeting; Mayor of Balaguer, Lorena González; the mayor of Mollerussa, Marc Solsona; the mayor of Cervera, Jan Pomés, and the mayor of Les Borges Blanques, Josep Farran.

On this occasion, the meeting emphasized the need to promote policies aimed at young people. "We must work so that our youth stay to live in our municipalities," said Alba Pijuan on behalf of all the mayors participating in the meeting.

The councilors have also called on the Government of the Generalitat to promote measures to support the primary, "basic" sector in their regions, in order to encourage the peasantry to be an option to be taken into account for young people. In this sense, they have called for efficient water management to face the extreme drought situation.

"Structural changes must be made to guarantee that we have water despite climate change," said Pijuan.

This Friday's meeting was held at the Tàrrega Urgell Museum and was the third meeting of the regional capitals of the Lleida plain since they started this work platform in 2019 in Lleida city. The second was held in Mollerussa in 2021.

The pandemic made holding these meetings difficult. For this reason, one of the objectives that the councilors have proposed is to recover their "regularity." "We want regularity to be able to meet to sew synergies and common points on which we want to work," said the mayor of Tàrrega. "Work The network gives us the strength to ask the rest of the institutions for the necessary support to help make initiatives to improve the territory a reality,” he concluded.
