Mataró will teach self defense techniques to students in schools

The Local Police of Mataró (Maresme) will teach the next course self-protection workshops and basic defensive techniques for young people in the fourth year of ESO from the educational centers of the city. The objective of the sessions is to work on the empowerment and training of girls so that they can face a situation of sexist violence.

Thus, women will receive training in basic prevention and self-defense techniques so that, should they find themselves in a situation that requires it, they can protect their living space or escape from violent situations in which they are intended to retain them .

During the course of the workshop, which will be given by Local Police officers with specific training in the matter, work will also be done on the development of the students' self-confidence and reaction capacity, and they will be given advice to try to avoid becoming an easy victim of a hypothetical assault or some criminal act.

The self-protection sessions aimed at ESO students are part of the training offer that the Local Police Safety Training Unit has prepared for the next course. A dozen different courses are offered for all the educational centers in the city and designed for different ages.

Among these training proposals, the main novelties for the next academic year are:

During this 2022-2023 academic year, the Local Police Security Training Unit has carried out a total of 242 training sessions aimed at more than 6,300 students from 38 educational centers in Mataró.

The women's self-protection workshops that will be given by the Local Police from the next academic year are added to those that are already being given from other areas of the Mataró City Council: on the one hand, through the Center for Information and Resources for Women (CIRD), Women's self-defense workshops have been organized on several occasions and, on the other hand, there is currently an offer for a women's self-defense workshop within the framework of the "Connecta amb l 'esport' project, an initiative to promote the practice of sport among young people from between 12 and 18 years old.

In addition, Mataró has had since 2011 a comprehensive Protocol for addressing gender violence to guarantee the coordinated attention of the health, social and other specific services of the Administration, the legal and protection services and the associative movements to give response to the specific needs of women who experience violence
