Macroproject to study causes of diseases in Camp de Tarragona

The IMPaCT Cohort macroproject will study why the population gets sick with the aim of preventing and treating diseases. For twenty years, an exhaustive study will be carried out that will analyze the causes and evolution of the participants' health.

The research, promoted by the Carlos III Health Institute of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and Universities, will begin in nine municipalities of Camp de Tarragona and 4,000 users will participate.

In Catalonia, 24,000 people will be monitored and 200,000 in the State as a whole. "It is the first large project on a par with other European countries; until now many of the results applied come from foreign cohorts without knowing if they adapt to our population," said the main researcher, Josep Basora.

In the study, personalized and precision medicine techniques will be applied to people between 16 and 79 years old. The first results could be obtained within five years, as explained by its promoters in the presentation made this Thursday in Tarragona.
