Macron calls a meeting with Sánchez and Costa to address the Midcat

The delicate European economic context makes it increasingly difficult for Paris to reject without further debate the construction of the Midcat, the project that aims to bring gas – and, in the future, hydrogen – by pipeline from Spain and Portugal to central Europe.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has reaffirmed this Friday in his opposition to accelerating the construction work of the project but has shown signs of feeling European pressure with the announcement of the celebration "in the next few days" of a summit in Paris with Pedro Sánchez and António Costa to address the issue.

Macron made the announcement at the end of the informal European Council held in Prague. He is willing, he has said, to reach "pragmatic solutions" with his Iberian partners.

For his part, Sánchez has declared himself “optimistic” about the possibility of bringing positions closer together. "Sooner rather than later we will reach an agreement," the Spanish president ventured in Prague.

Pressure is also being exerted from Berlin in favor of the project. “We are optimistic that, in view of the dimension of the crisis in which we find ourselves, it will be possible to achieve good European cooperation in all areas”, said Wolfgang Büchner, deputy spokesman for the German Executive.
