Kyiv accuses Russia of attacking Ukrainian energy facilities in three regions

Russia attacked Ukrainian energy facilities in three regions on Saturday, damaging equipment and injuring at least one energy worker, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said.

Galushchenko, via Telegram, has noted that the Russian attacks targeted the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine and the western regions of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, said its four thermal power plants were affected.

"The enemy again massively bombed Ukrainian energy facilities," DTEK said in a statement. "The company's equipment was seriously damaged. At this very moment, workers in the energy sector are trying to eliminate the consequences of the attack." The company said there were casualties, but did not provide further details.

Since March 22, Russian forces have intensified their bombing raids against the Ukrainian energy sector, attacking thermal and hydroelectric power plants and other energy infrastructure almost daily.

Ukraine has lost about 80% of its thermal generation and about 35% of its hydroelectric capacity, officials say. Its energy system was already weakened by a Russian air campaign in the first winter of the war that Russia launched in February 2022.

Despite mild spring weather in recent weeks, Ukraine has faced an electricity shortfall and the government has had to introduce scheduled power cuts in several regions and resort to emergency electricity imports.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukrainian air defense shot down 13 Russian missiles, Governor Serhiy Lysak said.

"Unfortunately we could not avoid the consequences. Energy facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kryvyi Rih regions were damaged and fires broke out."

Lysak said the water supply was interrupted in the city of Kryvyi Rih.

Russia claims to have intercepted 68 Ukrainian drones in the Krasnodar region (southern), the Russian Defense Ministry announced.

According to the ministry, 66 of these drones were shot down over the Krasnodar Territory, and the other two on the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.

"They tried to attack oil refineries and infrastructure. According to information obtained on the ground, there are no injuries or serious damage," the governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, wrote on Telegram.

The Ukrainian military has increased its drone attacks on Russian territory in recent months, especially against energy sites.
