Kenyan Ngetich breaks the women's 10km world record

Kenyan athlete Agnes Ngetich broke the women's 10km world record by clocking 29:24 at the World Athletics Elite Label road race in Brasov, Romania, this Sunday. The previous record was held by the late Agnes Tirop of Kenya in Herzogenaurach in 2021.

"In addition to being the fastest women-only 10km time, Ngetich's time is the third-fastest by a woman in history, behind only Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw's 29:14 in a mixed race in Castellón on last year and Yehualaw's 29:19, recorded in Valencia earlier this year," World Athletics said in a statement.

Ngetich, 22, covered the first 5 kilometers in 14:25, four seconds faster than the previous world record for that distance. Ngetich's compatriot Catherine Reline came in second in 30:14, while Ugandan Joy Cheptoyek settled for third place in 30:34. Weldon Langat won the men's race.
