Junts loses the Girona fief that passes into socialist hands 16 years later

Sixteen years after the last socialist victory in Girona, with Anna Pagans at the helm, last night the PSC once again positioned itself as the force with the most votes. The list headed by Sílvia Paneque obtained eight representatives, two more than in the last term.

In second place was Guanyem Girona, with the same councilors but with 656 fewer votes than the PSC; while Junts, which aspired to once again be the force with the most votes in Girona, falls to third position with six councilors.

The replacement of the current mayoress, Marta Madrenas, the former Minister of Universities, Gemma Geis, has lost three councilors compared to 2019. With the independence process then dominating the political debate, Girona became the only Catalan capital in those elections. that the Junts had been the most voted list. ERC, which has given stability to the Madrenas government in the last two years, loses a mayor.

In a scenario without majorities, who will take over the mayoralty is up in the air. The head of the Guanyem list, Lluc Salellas, endorsed by the good results of these elections in which he has won two more councilors than in 2019, could run for mayor.

It could only do so with Junts, although it is unlikely considering the harsh opposition that this pro-independence formation, made up of parties such as the CUP, has made to the Junts de Madrenas government.

Yesterday he said it clearly: "The city has voted for change after 12 years of Junts." The other option would be to lead a left-wing government with the PSC and, if you want, the ERC, as dance partners. But it will be Sílvia Paneque, being the force with the most votes, who will have the advantage to start the negotiations.

He said it yesterday after knowing the electoral result. “We have the responsibility of governing the city; we are honored to lead the change.” The possibility of a left-wing pact, a scenario to which his possible partners, ERC and Guanyem have not been disgusted in the campaign, could be the alternative. The PP re-enters the Consistory after four years of absence and so does Vox with one mayor each.

Outside the city of Girona, the night left a surprising result in Ripoll. Aliança Catalana, a party with a clearly anti-immigration discourse, won with six councilors. On the other hand, Junts obtained an absolute majority in Figueres after spending four years in opposition
