Goodbye to minimalism: psychedelia and nostalgia now rule in interior design

Is there anything more dreamlike and, in turn, disturbing, than an eye that you don't know what it sees? Do you feel nostalgic and at home you need more than Scandinavian minimalism that generates emptiness instead of comfort? Do you like strange objects and feel like you live in a space that transports you to other realities?.

Do you like strange objects and feel like you live in a space that transports you to other realities?

These are the premises that, based on surrealism and postmodernism, have given rise to a new trend that is causing a furor in interior design, as Pinterest rightly points out, which every year acts almost like a crystal ball for predicting trends. with a success rate of 80%. Searches for 'weircore bedroom' are up 550%, 'funky decor' up 695%, 'mushroom fantasy art' up 170%, and above all 'eclectic vintage interior design', which is up 850% .

The Weirdcore genre, which continues in the cinema, comics and the world of Artificial Intelligence, began to gain popularity when the youtuber DavidCrypt uploaded a video explaining this aesthetic. For him, the messages transmitted by an image or an object do not always have a unique explanation. It seeks, as Magritte, Man Ray and, especially, Salvador Dalí did, that interpretation that others find dreamy and totally out of context.

The Beatles did the same experimenting with instruments and lyrics that went beyond the here and now on their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pink Floyd on Dark Side of the Moon. And no, we're not talking about a seventies psychedelic design trend per se either.

Blanca Miró, without going any further, collects all mushroom-shaped objects, a fungus that has also given rise to high-end lamps from the Scandinavian firm Hay or decorative objects such as sculptures from the Barcelona brand Octaevo. Also, every day there are more people buying candles and chandeliers in colorful mixtures while mirrors have stopped being vertical to take on more dreamlike forms, as demonstrated by the latest launch for the home from Westwing.

After such a wave of minimalist design, many young people want to leave their mark on their homes and give free rein to their own fantasy, saying goodbye to chains like Ikea and other pre-manufactured product firms and loving vintage.

“After the pandemic, members of generation Z and boomers want to dream, surround themselves with what for many may even be disruptive but for them is strangely familiar. If not, how do we explain the success of 'Stranger Things' or 'Dark' in recent years?", reveals Louise McGrand, visual producer at the influential trend agency WGSN.

Undoubtedly, nostalgia is not 100% synonymous with melancholy and it is precisely for this reason that even chess is back in fashion and limited edition table football is included in MoMA. “Everything is an ode to the past as a place of greater internal understanding and by others, without 'trolls' or avatars. It is a resurgence of one's own identity and sense of community”, reveals the sociologist from the Complutense University of Madrid, Aurelia Martos.

“If we see ‘Euphoria’ we realize the emptiness that many characters feel. To them, what many might consider sinister is strangely familiar. They need that feeling of home, away from value judgments, a place created by them, away from instant fads and what others expect them to do”, adds Martos.

Just a few months ago, RS Barcelona presented the RS4 Home x Hey football table, a piece that shows the power of color and how play becomes art and can only be purchased at the MoMA store in New York. It is a table football designed to be one more at home, to play with family and friends. For all ages. So that you assemble it yourself and, when the game starts, you are the one who sets the rules of the game.

It is a declaration of intent to recover the good habit of family gaming. Turn off the TV, the console and the mobile phones to connect with your loved ones, letting time pass slowly. What's more, in other editions of this table football, the athletes take the gender that one wants.

Focusing on the comfort that nostalgia can bring us, one only has to see how this dreamy aesthetic has made many people, of all ages, prefer to stay in a luxury tent, the so-called 'glamping', rather than in a hotel to be in greater contact with nature, and that furniture firms such as DEDON name their latest collection 'DAYDREAM', inviting you to make your imaginary unique moments come true.

With wavy lines, designs of Viennese cane fabrics and generous proportions, the sofa bed that is the star of this new collection has a four-post canopy so that you can enjoy stretched out, alone or with others, reading a book, having a drink, chatting or, simply, resting.

“This collection is inspired by the famous stories of 'The Thousand and One Nights', with the romantic sensation of crossing the starry sky on a flying carpet and culminating the trip in an exotic and moderately luxurious place in which to relax and escape”, confesses Richard Frinier, designer of 'DAYDREAM'.

Julia Shapovalova, DEDON's Creative Director, notes that "DAYDREAM's message is more relevant today than ever and we are delighted that a new generation can experience the feeling of fun, fantasy and freedom."

Along the same lines of creating a functional space and, at the same time, full of sustainable creativity, just two months ago the Woody's sunglasses brand announced the opening of its new offices in Vic, Barcelona.

A building with three floors and more than 3,000 meters that is a reflection of the brand's commitment to sustainability, thus adopting a respectful and responsible architectural approach through the installation of solar panels for energy supply and the use of geothermal energy. for air conditioning.

Its interior design was entirely designed by the brand's creative team. Some offices in which the colors of the Memphis current of the seventies and eighties, very aligned with the Weirdcore, appear and demonstrate another of the great bets of Interior Design for offices today: a playful space, in which creativity flows in many moments playing and interacting without consoles and face to face, like with a ping pong table.

Hearts, rainbows, unicorns, lots of fuchsia and above all personality. The Weirdcore is extremely imaginative and is finally conquering, because the market rules, the great design headlines. It is not about altering consciousness, but about not limiting it.
