The Girona City Council and the University of Girona (UdG) announced this Wednesday that they are working to improve public transport connections on the campuses.
In a meeting between the mayor of the city, Lluc Salellas, and the rector of the UdG, Quim Salvi, the need to bring the Girocleta to the Montilivi campus and the Science and Technology Park or to expand the frequencies was put on the table. of the buses that go to the university faculties.
Salellas has warned that it is a "very complex job" and that he does not foresee solving it "in the short term" but he does hope to finish it before the end of the mandate.
On the other hand, the mayor has announced that he will help the UdG in the processing of new buildings and equipment to make it "grow."
Lluc Salellas and Quim Salvi are determined to improve public transport connections with university campuses. To this end, this Wednesday they met at Girona City Hall in a meeting to talk about the relationships that the university should have with the city.
The rector recalled that student mobility accounts for "70 percent of the CO2 emissions" generated by the UdG. That is why he is committed to looking for alternatives to reach the faculties that involve improving the offer of public transport or joint mobility.
Salvi added that the university has about 15,000 students and that is why it is necessary to adapt the offer to ensure that private transport goes down.
One of the options is for the Girona ATM to encompass more municipalities in the district, but also to strengthen the connections of the campuses with the rest of the city.
Along these lines, the mayor of Girona has detailed that they are working on bringing the Girocleta public bicycle service to the Montilivi campus and also to the Science and Technology Park.
They are two of the most important demands that the council has had on the table for years. Salellas assured that these are complex issues but that there is "political will" to resolve them.
In this first meeting between the rector of the UdG and the mayor of the city, they also discussed other topics such as developing joint projects and addressing the needs of the university community.
Quim Salvi believes that responding to these requests will help ensure that "the talent and opportunities" generated by the UdG represent an "improvement" for the city.
Furthermore, the mayor has assured that they will help "streamline all the necessary procedures" in the use of new equipment and buildings that the UdG needs to continue growing.
Lluc Salellas has specified that "beyond the Salut campus", which is projected between Girona and Salt, the university would have other growth opportunities in the near future.
After this meeting, it is planned to repeat meetings periodically throughout the entire mandate. The forecast is that UdG and Girona City Council will meet between three and four times a year.
In upcoming meetings, the mayor plans to address another of the open problems with the university community, which is housing and the lack of places in residences.
