The Acting Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, has appointed Army Major General Francisco Javier Marcos Rodríguez as the new head of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), replacing Lieutenant General Luis Martínez Meijide after his transfer to the reserve .

General Marcos is scheduled to “take office” next week. Until his appointment, the person in charge of directing the UME on an interim basis was Major General José Manuel Cuesta Casquero.

At the beginning of the month, Lieutenant General Luis Martínez Meijide left his position as head of the Unit, going to the reserve after almost four years in charge of it. The Ministry of Defense has announced this Friday, in a press release, that Francisco Javier Marcos from Toledo will be his successor, who had recently assumed command of the logistics centers of the Army after occupying the headquarters of the Airmobile Forces for three years. of the Army (FAMET).

General Marcos was director of the Infantry Academy in Toledo, between 2017 and 2019. The person in charge of the logistics centers of the Army has experience in missions abroad. Marcos was in 2010 head of the Afghanistan Helicopter Unit and in 1998 head of operations of the Spanish unit in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Throughout his career he has participated in other missions in places like Lebanon, Croatia and Sarajevo.

In the same way, the general has been assigned to the General Staff of the Rapid Action Force, the Army General Staff, the JEME Cabinet and the General Directorate of Defense Policy. Regarding his studies, he belongs to the XLIV Promotion of the General Military Academy and is a graduate of the General Staff. He graduated from the Unites States Army War College and has a master's degree from the US Institute of Strategic Studies, as well as a law degree from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, among other studies.
