Gasoline, at maximums: almost 94 euros to fill the tank

Drivers of a gasoline car are already paying a liter of fuel at the highest level recorded to date for the third week of August, after this fuel has become more expensive by almost 13 cents since June and has accumulated six consecutive weekly increases .

According to data recently published by the European Commission, with average prices corresponding to this Monday, a liter of gasoline already costs 1,709 euros in Spain, after having risen 1.7% in just one week. It is also the highest level so far this year.

The current price not only exceeds 1.7 euros for the first time in 2023, but is also above 1.58 euros in the same week last year, when it was at its all-time high due to tensions in international fuel prices caused by the invasion of Ukraine.

The price in the same week last year was actually 1.78 euros, but in Spanish pumps it had been reduced to 1.58 euros after discounting the bonus of 20 cents per liter applied by the Government until December 31 from last year.

In the case of diesel, the liter has risen 3.2% in just one week, to 1.601 euros, although it is not yet at the maximum for the year, which was reached in February, with 1.67 euros. A year ago, a liter of diesel cost an average of 1.81 euros, but its price was reduced to 1.61 euros once the discount was applied.

With these price levels, filling an average tank of 55 liters of gasoline now costs 93.9 euros, while doing so in the case of a diesel car stands at 88 euros.

The price of gasoline and diesel are in any case in Spain below the average for the euro zone, 1.87 euros for the first of these fuels and 1.75 for the second. However, they are more expensive before taxes: 0.94 euros for gasoline in Spain compared to 0.88 in the euro zone, and 0.944 for diesel, compared to 0.92 in neighboring countries.

According to the geoportal of the Ministry of Industry, the cheapest gas station in the province of Barcelona is in the Polígono Berenguer and belongs to the independent operator Abycer, which offers a liter of gasoline for 1.51 euros. In the province of Madrid, there is one of Ballenoil in Colmenar Viejo, on Calle del Tomillo, with a liter of gasoline at 1.56 euros.
