Francis appoints two Spaniards members of the Vatican Dicastery

This Saturday, the Holy See announced two appointments to form part of the Dicastery for Bishops of the Vatican: they are the new archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo, and the bishop of Teruel and Albarracín, José Antonio Satué.

This was confirmed by the press office of the Holy See and shortly afterwards the Archbishopric of Madrid reflected in a statement the trust that Francisco has once again shown with Cobo.

With this, the prelate of the Church in Madrid will begin to work under the orders of Cardinal Prevost, president of said organization. "The first thing I feel is surprise at these new responsibilities that the Pope is giving me," confessed Cobo, "overwhelmed by so much news and in such a short time," that he is in the midst of organizing the work of the archdiocese.

This appointment occurs just two months after his beginning of pastoral ministry and his subsequent creation as cardinal (with the latter Cobo will become a pope-electing member before a hypothetical conclave). The creation of him as a cardinal, precisely, will be effective as of September 30, in the consistory convened in Rome.

According to the information published by the Church in Aragon, José Antonio Satué, who will continue as bishop of Teruel and Albarracín, thanked the Holy Father for his confidence and asked his diocesans to pray for him, so that he knows how to carry out this service to the universal Church " with humility and dedication".

"The Dicastery for Bishops deals with everything related to the appointment of diocesan and titular bishops, apostolic administrators and, in general, the provision of particular Churches.

It does so taking into consideration the proposals of the particular Churches, the episcopal conferences and the Pontifical Representations, and after consulting the members of the presidency of the respective episcopal and metropolitan conferences.

Members of the People of God from the interested dioceses are also appropriately involved in this process," explained the Church in Aragon.

The Dicastery, in agreement with the episcopal conferences and their regional and continental unions, "indicates the criteria for the election of candidates.

These criteria must take into account the different cultural needs and be evaluated periodically." It also deals with the resignation of bishops from their office, in accordance with canonical provisions.
