Greek firefighters have managed to extinguish another 51 new wildfires originated in the last 24 hours, and according to the latest service update, the total number of active wildfires in the country is now 96. Although it is true that the large outbreaks in central Greece and on the islands of Rhodes, Corfu and Euboea have already been contained, which since last week have devastated tens of thousands of hectares of forests.

The 51 new outbreaks originated in the last hours have been mostly extinguished in their initial stages, according to the part of the firefighters.

A large contingent of ground troops is still operating on the island of Rhodes and in the northeast of Achaia, in the Peloponnese, where seaplane air attacks resumed this morning.

In the northeast of Corfu, a large contingent also deals with other active but controlled fronts, thanks to the drop in temperatures on Friday, assisted by 4 planes and 2 helicopters. Meanwhile, investigators are examining the causes of the new fires.

A campaign that will promote Rhodes Island in its main tourism markets is one of three lines of action the government will take to support the future of tourism in the fire-affected regions of the island.

This is one of the decisions made at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos mansion, which was also attended by ministers, local government and tourism representatives.

Without the active fire fronts and the emergency operation in its final phase, decisions are now directed towards offering immediate support through state mechanisms to affected residents and businesses. So far there are six buildings classified as condemned and 39 with less serious damage.

Regional and municipal authorities will also immediately engage in restoring road networks and the coastline.
