Feijóo navigates between two waters to fish in the fishing grounds of Sánchez and Abascal

At the same time convince those who demand solutions to the crisis and those who are not satisfied with it and ask the Popular Party to give the cultural battle. That is, PSOE voters disenchanted with Pedro Sánchez and former PP voters who went to Vox because of Santiago Abascal's harsh speech. It is the squaring of the circle that Alberto Núñez Feijóo has imposed on himself, who wants the vote of those who prioritize the ability to govern over acronyms, and of those who reject any relationship with nationalists or independentists other than total confrontation, without concessions.

"We must aspire to transcend our initials," said the president of the PP at the closing of the interparliamentary held in Toledo this weekend, and that summarizes his aspiration: to make a project for the majority, that the government gives him, fishing, In addition to the PP fishing ground, which he has consolidated in his months at the head of the party, also in the PSOE and Vox. The economic crisis has allowed him to seek votes among Sánchez's electorate, and that has given Feijóo wings in the polls, except for those of the CIS, "which reminds us every day that we have not won."

But the popular leader believes that Sánchez, who he sees as nervous and concerned about the image of division that the Government gives – for example regarding NATO or the proposals to cap the prices of the shopping basket – is now ready for anything to come back in the polls. The PP attributes to this what they understand as a campaign orchestrated by the Government and the PSOE against Feijóo: for the tax on electricity companies and the attempt to confront him with the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, to discredit his ability of management, or by the proposals it makes. "Insulting us, but then copying them," the PP leader said yesterday, as he also did in the Senate debate. In this field, that of presenting alternatives, is where Núñez Feijóo is comfortable, and that is why he will not give up his "proactive opposition." The proposals that he made in the energy saving plan are inscribed here, from which Sánchez took some of the measures adopted, such as the reduction of VAT on gas that the Council of Ministers will approve tomorrow.

Just yesterday, Feijóo made a new proposal to Sánchez: "negotiate a plan that combines an agreed and responsible income agreement and a reduction in VAT on basic products", to get a reduction in the shopping basket and not "the occurrences ” that he attributes to the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz.

But Feijóo is so focused on economic measures, convinced that it is what the Government will give him, that there are those who fear in the party that he may have lost camber in the cultural battle. He was able to verify it yesterday when his absence at the Barcelona demonstration in defense of Castilian being the vehicular language in Catalan classrooms was taken advantage of by Santiago Abascal and Inés Arrimadas to make him ugly for not having attended. That forced Feijóo to establish his position from Toledo: “All of us who are here are also there”, and boasting of coming from a bilingual community, claimed his “linguistic cordiality” for the autonomous communities “that have the privilege of having two languages ”.

That is to say, defense of Castilian, but far from the postulates of Vox: "The PP believes in the Spain of the autonomies", recalled the popular leader, because nobody in that community "has the right to revolt because there are people in Catalonia who want speak Spanish”, but neither does he consider it acceptable “that no Spaniard gets upset because someone speaks Catalan in Catalonia”.
