Families from the Campanar fire leave the municipal flat and the houses remain for social rent

Four of the families who lost their homes in the brutal Campanar fire and who were rehoused in a municipal building have already abandoned this apartment provided by the Valencia City Council after renting other homes in other areas of the city. In total, there were 99 families - and a total of 229 people - who were resettled in the Safranar neighborhood after the fire that claimed 10 lives and engulfed two entire buildings.

Therefore, of the 131 homes in the building, 32 remained empty. Now, after the departure of the new tenants - who have been there for just over a month - the number of empty properties rises to 36 and the City Council has already started the procedures to allocate them for social rental for young people and those over 65 years of age. This was the destiny of this building. but the unforeseen event in Campanar paralyzed him.

As explained by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Juan Giner, “once the relocation of the people affected by the fire has been completed, we have to continue responding to the needs of our neighbors who are waiting to have access to affordable rental housing.”

Giner explained that another 6 homes that are property of the City Council and that, for different reasons, have been left empty are also going to be awarded. In this way, in total, 42 homes may be awarded.

In this sense, the Councilor for Urban Planning has pointed out that, “and as the mayor of València already confirmed in her first visit to the building, it will be used for renting young people and people over 65 years of age, with affordable prices depending on the income, since these are the two social groups that, currently, are encountering the most problems when it comes to accessing housing.”

With this, the City Council explains in a statement, there are now two awards of affordable rental homes made by the City Council, given that at the beginning of December 2023, 18 homes were already granted.

“With the award that begins now, in just 5 months the city council will have already awarded 54 affordable rental homes, while in the 4 years of the previous legislature only 31 homes were awarded,” councilor Juan Giner took the opportunity to underline.
