Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has ordered the company's directors to "pause all hiring worldwide" in an email to which the Reuters agency has had access.
The notice says it has a "very bad feeling" about the economy and that the electric car maker needs to cut staff by around 10%.
This communication was sent last Thursday, shortly after Musk himself asked Tesla employees to return to the offices and permanently stop telecommuting or leave the company.
"Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week," Musk wrote in another email sent to employees Tuesday night. "If you don't show up, we'll assume you've quit."
Tesla has declined to comment on these two notifications.
