The Workers' Housing Cooperative of El Prat de Llobregat has started work on the first promotion of officially protected cooperative housing for rent in Catalonia, the Baix Llobregat City Council has explained.
"It is a pioneering model in Catalonia since, for the first time, cooperative housing will be allocated entirely to affordable rentals," the City Council described in a press release.
The development, located in the new Eixample Sud neighborhood, consists of 101 subsidized homes, parking and storage rooms. It is being built on a municipal property that the City Council has transferred for a period of 75 years. Everything is part of a project shared between the Workers' Housing Cooperative and the El Prat City Council.
The Minister of Territory of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Ester Capella, attended this Wednesday the ceremony of laying the first stone of the building together with the mayor of El Prat, Lluís Mijoler; and the president of the Housing Workers Cooperative, Antonio Pedrero.
Founded in the 60s of the last century, the El Prat de Llobregat Housing Workers Cooperative is one of the cooperatives dedicated to this sector with the longest history in Catalonia and continues to innovate today.
