A video causes consternation in the United States by showing how a Circleville (Ohio) police dog attacks a black driver after he, and after leading a run, got out of the vehicle and was with his hands up.
In the background, a traffic patrol officer can be heard shouting "don't let go of the dog", but the local uniform, identified as R. Speakman, urges his "K9", which pounces on the detainee, Jadarrius Rose, 23 years old and unarmed, who shouts "get me off my back". Once he is released from the jaws of the canine, a patrol car is seen raising its hands to its face when it sees the injuries suffered by the driver.
The case, which happened on July 4, is under investigation, according to reports. For Nana Watson, president of the Columbus chapter of the NAACP, the historic civil rights organization, those images jogged her memory with a grim remembrance.
“I am traumatized because it has brought back memories of the 1960s,” she told ABC. There are not a few photographs from that time in which it is certified how the police used dogs to attack black protesters.
“I was afraid for him (the driver), because they released the dog when he had already surrendered. It saddens me that in 2023 there will be police officers unleashing a dog on a person who clearly has their hands up,” Watson said. And he stressed that this scene would never have occurred with a white person.
Once released, Rose received immediate medical attention from the agents themselves. He was then transferred to a hospital. When he was released, he was booked into the Ross County Jail. He was released on bail on the 7th, after appearing before a judge and being charged with failing to comply with the order to stop given to him by the police, a crime that can mean six to 18 months in jail.
Rose was driving a truck when she was pulled over by highway patrol officers after detecting that her vehicle was missing its left rear fender. Despite the signal lights, and maintaining visual contact, he ignored the order and continued on his way. Freeway troopers called Circleville police for help.
There was a chase. In the police version it was explained that, when the truck stopped, an agent pointed a gun at him and told him to get out of the vehicle. Instead, he started again. Amid police cars, Rose finally stopped. When leaving her cabin, they told him to lie down, but he chose to raise her hands.
From the recording, police officer Speakman threatens him that if he doesn't lie down, he will release the dog. However, a patrolman asks him to approach him. Despite this, Speakman urges the canine on while a patrolman yells at him "don't let go of the dog, he's got his hands up." The animal runs and pounces on Rose. The video shows how the "K9" bites the detainee, who tries to escape the attack with his arms.
