Defense assures there is no forecast that Maó will become a NATO naval base

The Ministry of Defense specified this Saturday that the use of the Maó naval base, in Menorca, is "punctual" and there is no expectation that it will be a NATO naval base.

The Ministry headed by Margarita Robles thus specifies the information published on the conversion of Mahón into the third Spanish NATO naval base where Alliance ships can dock and anchor, along with those of Rota (Cádiz) and Cartagena ( Murcia) in Operation 'Sea Guardian' to combat terrorism.

As a result of this information, Defense reported that "there is no provision for the Balearic territory to become a naval base for the organization, beyond its current role as a specific port of call for the Alliance's permanent fleets."
