The Spanish Alejandro Davidovich Fokina easily beat the German Alexander Zverev on Wednesday in the Canadian Tennis Open and will now play the round of 16 against the Norwegian Casper Ruud, fifth in the world ranking.

Davidovich (37) only needed an hour to beat Zverev in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, in a match in which the Spaniard dominated from the first game.

Zverev made numerous mistakes on the hard surface of Toronto and Davidovich never let him settle on the court. The German committed five double faults and only achieved a 56% success rate with his first serve compared to 71% for the player from Malaga.

The percentage of points won with the second serve was overwhelming for the Spaniard: Davidovich 77% to Zverev's 25%.

After the match, Davidovich declared that it had been one of the best wins of his career.

"Zverev has always stuck to me in all the games. Either he beat me easily or I didn't believe it so much. In the end today was a very complicated game, (Zverev) had just beaten (Tallon) Griekspoor who had come to the final in Washington. I thought I was going to play a lot better today," Davidovich explained.

"In the end he made several mistakes, I took advantage of them, I played very brave, very fast and I didn't let him breathe or think about anything so he wouldn't come crashing down" he added.

Davidovich said it was the pressure he put on the Hamburg player that allowed him to dominate from the start.

"I have put a lot of rhythm, a lot of intensity from the first moment and I think that has come to him. He has not served very well today, his serve percentage has been very low and I have taken advantage of it", he concluded.
