David Ferrer will be the new Davis Cup captain

The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) confirmed this Thursday that David Ferrer, current director of the Conde de Godó-Open Banc Sabadell Trophy, will be the new captain of the Davis Cup team for the next three seasons, replacing Sergi Bruguera, who held the position for the last four years.

Ferrer, who will be presented on Monday the 19th at the headquarters of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), retired from professional tennis in May 2019 with a record that includes 27 titles in 52 finals played, 63 Grand Slams played and 7 years between the first in the world ranking, in which it reached number three in 2013.

Born in Jávea (Alicante) 40 years ago, Ferrer won three Davis Cup titles with Spain, in 2008, 2009 and 2011, and reached a fourth final in 2012. In total he played 20 qualifiers, resulting in 28 wins and 5 losses.

His most outstanding triumph on the circuit was achieved at the Masters 1,000 in Paris in 2013, a few months after reaching his only Grand Slam final, at Roland Garros against Rafael Nadal. In the first of his 7 appearances at the 2007 ATP Masters, he also reached the final against the Swiss Roger Federer.

Ferrer played three Olympic Games, with a diploma in doubles in London 2012 together with Feliciano López.

The RFET announced on the 12th the agreement reached with Sergi Bruguera to leave the captaincy, after the Spanish team was eliminated by Croatia in the quarterfinals of the last edition, in which Canada won the title against Australia. With Bruguera at the helm, Spain won its sixth salad bowl in 2019.
