DANA arrives in Catalonia and leaves a tornado in the Baix Ebre

The abundant rains that have begun to occur this Saturday in Spain, especially in the Valencian Community, have also reached the south of Catalonia, where a small tornado was recorded this morning in the Baix Ebre, in the province of Tarragona. It is the prelude to DANA, the cold drop, which will affect the southern half of Catalonia starting this afternoon.

The meteorological phenomenon, which a Twitter user has spread through the social network, has been filmed by a neighbor from the municipality of Camarles. As can be clearly seen in the images, the whirlpool has touched the ground, although it would not have caused significant damage.

According to the Meteocat forecast, more intense rains are expected for this Saturday, an episode that will last until Sunday and that will be accompanied by strong waves, for which reason Civil Protection has activated the INUNCAT plan alert.

The forecast is that 40 liters per square meter will be exceeded in 30 minutes in the Terres de L'Ebre counties, and 30 liters per square meter in 30 minutes in the rest of the counties of the southern half, specifically, the Tarragona and central coast and precoastal. At night, the storm could reach the southern regions of Barcelona.

The downpours can also be accompanied by storms and strong waves, especially on Sunday, with waves that can exceed 4 meters in height in the southern half of Catalonia. A strong wind alert has also been activated on the central coast and pre-coastal.

Faced with this new episode of heavy rains, Civil Protection asks citizens to take extreme precautions, especially on the road, avoid crossing streams and flood areas and stay away from ports and breakwaters in areas where strong waves are expected.
