Cuixart, Sopa de Cabra, Sisa and al Sónar, Creu de Sant Jordi

Jordi Cuixart, former president of Òmnium Cultural, will be honored in 2023 with the Creu de Sant Jordi awarded by the Generalitat. The Government highlights Cuixart's work in social activism and the defense of Catalan culture, as well as civil rights and democracy. The one who was the leader of the sovereign entity between 2015 and 2022 "was a key figure in favor of the right to freely and peacefully express political ideas within the framework of Catalonia's right to self-determination", as explained by the Catalan Executive.

The guards will be handed over at the beginning of July, as announced by the Government spokesperson, Patrícia Plaja, at the press conference after the Executive Council meeting. In any case, the Government has agreed today to award the Creu de Sant Jordi to a total of 20 personalities and 10 entities, among which the one awarded to Sopa de Cabra also stands out for its "notorious contribution to Catalan musical culture", as one of the main members of the Catalan rock movement. Also the musician Jaume Sisa and the Sónar festival. Regarding the former, the Generalitat underlines his "primordial contribution to Catalan musical culture" and his work as one of the most outstanding contemporary singer-songwriters. From the author, Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol is for the Generalitat a great intergenerational reference in the repertoire of Catalan popular music.

The distinction to the Sónar festival is justified by the Government for its "firm commitment to the electronic music scene and contemporary multimedia art in the city of Barcelona". The festival, which this year will celebrate its 30th edition, combines playful activity with artistic activity and experimentation with new electronic music trends.

The Creu de Sant Jordi, a distinction created in 1981, is awarded to all those personalities who have stood out for their projection of the identity of Catalonia, especially in the cultural and civic sphere.
