Catalonia registers a new temperature record with 45ºC in Darnius

Catalonia is experiencing a new peak of intense heat this Tuesday, the third of the summer, which has led thermometers to set a new all-time temperature record with 45º Celsius registered in Darnius (Alt Empordà) this Tuesday.

This mark exceeds the highest temperature so far that was obtained in 2019 in Alcarràs and that reached 43.8ºC in the middle of the afternoon, around 5:00 p.m., as reported by the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (SMC).

During today's session, some records have also been broken in the Empordà. In La Bisbal d'Empordà (Baix Emporà), 43.1 degrees have been reached, surpassing the 2003 record. In Navata (Alt Empordà) it has reached 43.5 degrees Celsius, breaking a 2015 record.

In the Vallès Oriental some historical records have also been pulverized. In Vilanova del Vallès, 42.8ºC has been reached, when the previous maximum, also registered in 2015, was 41.5ºC.

The Government has asked for "maximum caution" throughout the day and the Rural Agents have closed access to the natural spaces of Cap de Creus, La Serra de Montsant, Montgrí, Garraf and La Albera and Montmell-Marmellar due to the risk of fire

The main heat peak in Catalonia is scheduled for this Tuesday. The maximum temperature values in the interior of the country will oscillate around 42º C and locally around 44º C in points of Girona, where the maximum danger will be reached.

To alleviate the effects of extreme heat, the basements of the Girona cathedral join the network of climate shelters against the wave that affects the city these days. The City Council has also agreed that the churches of El Mercadal and Sant Narcís act as spaces to protect themselves from the heat.

In addition, free access will also be allowed to people over 65 years of age in the Devesa swimming pools, the Fontajau pavilion showers will be enabled and bottles of water will be provided to the homeless who live in the city.
