Brussels expects "constructive cooperation" with the new Italian government

"We look forward to constructive cooperation with the new Italian authorities." This is how the European Commission hopes that the new relationship can be developed with the government that comes out of the polls and that, predictably, will have Giorgia Meloni as Prime Minister.

The feeling of relief left by the election of Emmanuel Macron as president of France last April has been very different from that left after the elections in Italy, the third largest economy in the eurozone and the founding country of the European Union.

Shortly after the first results that gave Emmanuel Macron as the winner, the presidents of the Council, Charles Michel; and of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, rushed to congratulate the newly elected president.

Although it is true that the official slogan in the Commission is that "We never comment on the electoral results", recalled the spokesman for the European Commission, Eric Mamer.

Italy is one of the countries with the highest debt in the European Union (150% of GDP) and is expected to undertake the necessary reforms of the Recovery Plan, with a total of 68,500 million euros in subsidies and 122,000 in loans. Although Giorgia Meloni has shown her intention to change the plan.

In any case, Mamer has refused to assess the meaning of the Italian vote as a protest also against the European Union. "Seeing in these elections a kind of judgment on Europe seems to me, in any case, an extreme simplification," rejected the community spokesman.

For its part, the European People's Party has already congratulated Forza Italia, a group of which it is also a member in the European Parliament. “Congratulations to Forza Italia! Italy is a pillar of Europe and our party a compass for pro-European values. We trust that Forza Italia will guide the next government towards a path that works in the interests of Italians and as part of a strong and stable Europe”, the Party, chaired by the German Manfred Weber, also leader, announced through social networks. of the popular in the European Parliament.

However, the leader of the social democratic group in the European Parliament, the Spanish Iratxe García Pérez, has been very critical. “Meloni's post-fascism arrives in Italy accompanied by the alliance of Forza Italia, of the EPP, and the League, of Identity and Democracy. Dark day for Italy and for Europe”, she rejected on her twitter account.

After the election of Giorgia Meloni, the European Conservatives and Reformists party (of which Vox is also a member and of which Meloni is president) gains presence among the heads of state and government of the European Union. It becomes the third most represented party with respect to its population. If finally Prime Minister, Meloni would join Mateusz Morawieki, Prime Minister of Poland and Petr Fiala, of the Czech Republic. Both have already congratulated him.
