Boats in dry dock in the Sau Desert

In this series of photographs in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can see that, indeed, the Sau reservoir seems to have stopped being a swamp.

One of the snapshots that attracts the most attention is that of the boats on the completely dry dock, without any water. Pedalo boats designed for visitors to have fun navigating through the swamp and which are now in dry dock.

Church, cemetery, houses on both sides of the swamp, the old mill, streets can be guessed... The drought allows us to rediscover the corners of the old town of Sant Romà de Sau.

The drought shows us what we really should not see, since the current landscape in the Sau reservoir is the reflection of the persistent drought that plagues Catalonia. We can look, for example, at the cracked ground.

The reservoir level remains at 17%, when last year it was at 26% and the average for the last five years is 96%. The current resources in the reservoirs of the internal basins of Catalonia are at a worrying 22%, according to the Catalan Water Agency.
