At least four dead and 51 missing after the sinking of a migrant boat in Tunisia

At least four dead and 51 missing after the sinking this Sunday of a sub-Saharan migrant boat off the coast of the Querquenes Islands (Tunisia). In addition, the Tunisian authorities have rescued two people, as reported by the spokesman for the Court of First Instance of Sfax 1 to the Mosaique FM radio station.

For his part, the attorney general of the aforementioned court has authorized an investigation into the sinking of the boat, which was carrying 57 irregular migrants. In addition, the National Guard has announced this Sunday on its Facebook account that it has recovered at least ten bodies in the last 48 hours due to the sinking of a ship from El Awabed.

Tunisia has become in recent years one of the main departure points for ships trying to reach European shores. While most of the migrants embarking on this journey come from sub-Saharan Africa, there has been an uptick in the number of Tunisians trying to flee the country as the economic and political crisis deepens.
