Ariel, the dog who was born with six legs that adapts to his new life with four

Ariel, a spaniel who was born with six legs and was named after the character in “The Little Mermaid” (because the extra two-legged appendage on the end looked like a fin) ran across the lawn Saturday while adjusting to the life on four legs.

The dog was found in central Pembroke, Wales, in September and animal shelter Greenacres Rescue rescued her and raised funds for her surgery.

"She's doing very well," said Vicki Black, director of Langford Vets Small Animal Referral Hospital, where she had surgery Thursday. Black said the hospital, which is part of the University of Bristol, had never seen a six-legged dog or performed such an operation.

The extra legs extended from his right hindquarters and hindered his walking, dangling next to his wagging tail as he paced awkwardly in a video recorded before the operation.

On Saturday, when he was discharged, he walked out onto the grass outside the hospital with his nose to the ground and straining on his leash.
