Almost 6,000 people gather in Cornellà de Llobregat to condemn the latest femicide

The stage of Plaza Catalunya that was prepared to host the concerts of Los 40 de la Fiesta Mayor has served, after the celebrations were suspended, as the epicenter of the cry against the latest episode of sexist violence.

Almost 6,000 people, according to the Cornellà de Llobregat Urban Police, have gathered in the municipality this Sunday, June 11, to reject the latest femicide, which has occurred in this Baix Llobregat town. In an institutional statement, the murder of a woman at the hands of her partner has been condemned "roundly and energetically" and solidarity has been shown towards the victim's family.

The event held was attended by some of the artists who had to perform that afternoon in Cornellà de Llobregat on the occasion of the Corpus Christi festivities, such as Nil Moliner or Alfred García.

The concentration began with a speech condemning the murder by radio host Toni Aguilar, who this Sunday afternoon had to present the concerts scheduled for the Cornellà festival. All acts have been suspended and the City Council has decreed three days of mourning. Next, the Castellers de Cornellà have made a symbolic pillar, without music, and the artists Oscar and Alejandra Larios have interpreted the song 'Lobo' by Elena Gadel. The act concluded with five minutes of silence.

The Minister for Equality and Feminism, Tània Verge, expressed her "rejection, indignation and dismay" at the event and celebrated that "a flood of people" had gathered in the municipality as a sign of condemnation. “Today the whole country is Cornellà”, said the minister. In this way, she has recalled that with this victim there are five women murdered by their male partners or ex-partners during 2023 in Catalonia.

The minister has set 118 femicides in the last decade, which have meant that 90 creatures have been orphaned. “Too many lives cut short,” Verge has said. “Machismo kills, machismo violates, machismo harasses and does not understand social class, zip code or origin, but it has a gender. We need to overthrow the patriarchy ”, assured the minister.

The mayor of Cornellà de Llobregat, Antonio Balmón, and several mayors of municipalities in Baix Llobregat could also be seen on the stage of Plaza de Catalunya. At the end of the rally, for its part, the Feminist Coordinator of Cornellà has also called an act of condemnation at 7:30 pm in Plaça de la Dona, attended by around a hundred people.

The crime occurred in the early hours of Sunday June 11 at an address on Cornellà Modern street, in the Gavarra neighborhood. The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested the alleged murderer, a 34-year-old man and partner of the victim, in the same house. At the time of the event, the couple's two-year-old daughter and some relatives were present. The victim received several stab wounds and EMS was unable to revive her. The case has been investigated by the court for violence against women in Cornellà.

Women who suffer a situation of violence have the permanent attention service at number 900 900 120, free and confidential. In addition, they can call the emergency telephone number 112.
