A Romanesque church for a ghost town

A few kilometers from Tarragona, in the middle of the Riu Clar industrial estate and hidden under a pile of weeds, are the remains of an old church from between the 10th and early 13th centuries that was part of a small forgotten medieval town, called Montgons.

Montgons is an uninhabited town since the 16th century. I find this place curious, which is important to make known, as with this report in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos. It is quite easy to access, Google Maps even indicates it with the name "Despoblat els Montgons".

There are several elements of interest. One of them is the church of Sant Julià de Montgons, the old parish of the town, located near the remains of the castle. It is very damaged and even appears to have been used as a home at some point. The chapel has a single nave.

The truth is that the remains of Montgons castle are in very poor condition. In fact, only one of the walls of what had been a rectangular fortress remains. Near the castle and the church we also find the remains of medieval homes, although invaded by vegetation.

Finally, we can also visit the Coves dels Montgons, two cavities, located next to each other, which together measure about 10 meters in front and about 2 meters deep. The curious thing is that they are joined inside by an artificial gallery about 16 meters long, less than 1 meter high and about 80 cm wide.
