A quarter of the population has anemia: these iron-rich foods can help

Anemia is a more common condition than it seems. A study carried out over 30 years that has just been published in The Lancet Haematology magazine estimates that there are 1.92 billion people in the world who have this disease. The publication ensures that women and children are the ones who are most affected by this condition, which is usually linked to a deficiency of iron in the diet.

Iron is one of the most important minerals for the proper functioning of the body and we must ensure that it is present in the largest amount of food we eat. Our energy, the synthesis of hormones or the transport of oxygen throughout our body depend on this.

Once again, the diet is essential to have good levels of this mineral, although it is also important to control whether we absorb it correctly. Many foods contain it, although that of animal origin, which is called heme iron, is better absorbed by our body.

Plant-based foods tend to be more abundant in non-heme iron, which is not assimilated as well, and sometimes you have to combine it with other ingredients to be able to absorb it.

One of the nutrients that helps us fix iron the most is vitamin C. Eating foods rich in this nutrient, such as citrus fruits and some vegetables, will help us keep ourselves in perfect condition.
