A Mallorcan lawyer will carry out the public prosecution in the Koldo case

The Veritas Justicia association, led by the Mallorcan lawyer Eduardo Luna, will carry out the popular prosecution in the case that investigates the mask plot linked to Koldo García, advisor to the former Minister of Development José Luis Ábalos. The National Court has accepted the appearance of an entity that was born in the Balearic Islands in 2020 and that, among its objectives, is to “ensure the transparency of public institutions, report cases in which the general interest is violated and fight "actively against any type of corruption, especially political or institutional corruption."

The decision of the National Court comes after two previous orders in which it has denied the representation of the Government of Marga Prohens as an injured party. In fact, part of the investigation that the courts are carrying out also affects the role played by the popular president's Executive in trying to determine whether she succumbed to the pressures of the plot to expire a claim of 2.6 million euros for the masks.

The Veritas Justicia entity assures that the Koldo case affects the Balearic Islands “in the saddest and most tragic time in our modern history”, during a pandemic that left thousands dead and very serious economic consequences for millions of families. "While health workers, doctors and emergency personnel suffered a terrible lack of resources, some individuals profited from the sale of masks and medical supplies unsuitable for use, all with the connivance of senior officials from different central State institutions and autonomous”, points out the entity.

He adds that this case has been “the straw that broke the camel's back” of the “fatigue and disappointment” that many citizens feel “in the face of corruption systemically established in power.” “The current political situation, increasingly decadent, where the judiciary's independence is systematically attacked and institutions dependent on the State are exploited, only demonstrates the importance and necessity of popular action,” he adds.

The Koldo plot has singularly affected the Balearic Islands. The Government of Francina Armengol purchased 1.4 million masks from the company Soluciones de Gestión for an amount of 3.7 million euros, but shortly after it verified that the masks received were not of the quality of those paid for. The surcharge was 2.6 million euros and the Armengol Government signed a proposal to claim this amount one day before leaving the Presidency.

The claim was maintained by the new Government of Marga Prohens, which has just announced that it is renouncing the claim due to the impossibility of it succeeding. The Balearic Government will present a new claim for the entire amount paid. The PSOE maintains that Prohens let the file expire after receiving pressure from the plot, pressure that is reflected in the recordings intercepted by the Civil Guard on the members of the plot.
