A flamed pizza that lit the decoration of the premises causing a fire was of an "extremely high" intensity. That is the main hypothesis that the municipal technicians handle as the origin of the fire that last night devastated the Burro Canaglia Bar restaurant
The events occurred after 11:00 p.m. at the premises located in the Plaza de Manuel Becerra in the capital. A possible carelessness when finishing the preparation of a flambé pizza -one of the restaurant's claims that, as some clients admit to La Vanguardia, is ceremoniously presented in the dining room every time it is served at a table- favored that part of the decoration of the establishment turned on.
The decorative material present on the walls and ceiling favored the rapid spread of the flames near the entrance of the premises, causing an "extremely high" intensity fire that generated a lot of smoke. With the exit blocked, the trapped people tried to take refuge at the back of the restaurant while several employees tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire. Other people had the chance to hide in the kitchen, crouch down and wait, but "the conditions were miserable for everyone."
The dining room became a mousetrap since the place does not have an emergency exit. "They were totally trapped," acknowledged the head of the Madrid Fire Department, Carlos Marín.
After regretting what happened and expressing his affection to the "family, friends and loved ones of the victims", the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, explained that everything was in order "from the point of view of the regulations". .
