A baby orangutan dies at the Barcelona Zoo due to respiratory problems

An orangutan calf died at the Barcelona Zoo on Sunday May 21 and the first indications have pointed to a respiratory problem, the City Council reported this Wednesday.

The Zoo "is waiting to receive the analyzes" carried out with the health authorities and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).

The consistory has warned that death "can occur suddenly" in cases of offspring of wild animals, and has said that they did not detect any abnormality in the behavior of the offspring.

The animal organization ZooXXI has censured the "absolute policy of silence on the part of the management" of the Barcelona Zoo and has accused it of not having reported the event.

He has warned that the orangutans "endured the remodeling works of a facility that had structural errors", so he believes that the animals have been subjected to a stressful situation.

Along these lines, he believes that "the well-being of these animals is so low that their baldness can be clearly observed", which he sees as an infallible indicator.

ZooXXI's scientific coordinator, Rosi Carro, has accused the Zoo of "prioritizing the exhibition of captive animals, and this perpetuates the misconception that the animals are" available.
