39 years later they recognize the number one position at Christmas to 'Last Christmas' by Wham!

The well-known Christmas theme song Last Christmas by the British duo Wham! has reached number one in the Christmas week on the official UK chart 39 years after its release in 1984.

The hit beat You're Christmas To me by Sam Ryder, in second place, and All I Want For Christmas Is You by Maria Carey, as announced this Friday by The Official Charts Company, the entity that compiles data for the sector.

They were followed by Noah Kahan's Stick Season, Ed Sheeran's Merry Christmas

Despite its popularity, it is the first time that the song composed by the late George Michael and performed with his friend Andrew Ridgeley reaches number one in the week of Christmas - although it already held the first position in January 2021 -.

According to The Official Charts Company, this is because in the year of its release it was displaced by Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid, which raised funds against the famine in Ethiopia.

Upon learning of the achievement announced today, Ridgeley said "it's wonderful" to have achieved it.

The musician stated that Michael, who died on Christmas Day 2016, had always wanted the song to top the Christmas list.

"He felt that any great songwriter should be able to write a Christmas hit. Unfortunately it's too late for George, but he would be absolutely delighted," he declared.

The number one album this Christmas is 'Hackney Diamonds', the latest work by the Rolling Stones.
