RTVE in 8K: When will it arrive and what is known so far?

When we are about to watch a series or a movie, we want the resolution of the image to have exceptional quality. In this search for a great image processing, 8K has appeared, an ultra high definition image (Ultra HD) that, up to now, is the most advanced on the market. In other words, 8K has four times more resolution than the current 4K, making the image pixels almost imperceptible to the human eye even if we are at a considerably close distance.

The great difference in image that 8K televisions have provided is due to their exceptional image processing. This extraordinary image processing is due to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) that manages to define the image with a very high quality.

Following the technological advances in the market as far as audiovisual matters are concerned, Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) got down to work. Not surprisingly, it was the first broadcaster in the world to broadcast content in 8k through Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) using the DVB-T2 technological system (second generation Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial). After these pilot tests, RTVE is working to be able to broadcast live in 8K through DTT.

After having carried out this first pilot test in 8K, RTVE together with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), Cisco servers and other collaborators, seeks to "achieve the capture, compression and distribution of UHD-2 signal content - 8K Complete Phase 2 with a live and coded signal in real time” as broadcast from the public channel. Of course, for the moment the live broadcast of RTVE in 8K does not have a specific date due to its high complexity.

This RTVE project is part of the activities programmed within the RTVE Chair at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. This Chair seeks to develop pioneering experiences both in the field of UHD signal production and broadcasting.

Within the framework of achieving efficient consumption, the European Commission has established an Energy Efficiency Index that includes household appliances and also televisions and, above all, those that emit with 8K technology. In such a way that if a television wants to broadcast in 8K —which measures its consumption in pixels— it must comply with the energy scale set by Europe.
