Javier Tebas, provisionally proclaimed president of LaLiga

Javier Tebas has been provisionally proclaimed president of LaLiga this Tuesday without having any opposition, after the closing of the deadline for the presentation of candidacies, as confirmed by the organization. The lawyer would thus begin his fourth consecutive term at the head of Spanish football since he took office in April 2013 to replace José Luis Astiazarán.

The LaLiga Electoral Commission, formed and constituted at random in November by Rayo Vallecano, Girona, Villarreal, Leganés and Eibar, met today agreeing to validate Tebas' candidacy and its proclamation. The date of next Thursday the 14th has also been set to resolve any appeals or, where appropriate, make the president's proclamation definitive.

Likewise, LaLiga indicated that in the event that no appeals have been filed against the agreements of the Electoral Commission, it may unanimously advance its meeting to December 12, 2023 after the deadline to file an appeal expires at 8:00 p.m.

On November 22, Tebas presented his candidacy as president of LaLiga and called new elections in the football employers' association, after resigning from office before his last term expired on December 26. Thus, the entire electoral process was brought forward a month, avoiding an overlap with the elections of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that will take place in the first quarter of 2024.

The Spanish lawyer has not only been the sole candidate in 2023, but also in the latest LaLiga electoral processes, with the exception of the one held in 2016. The former president of Eibar, Alex Aranzábal, presented his candidacy that year as an opponent of Javier Tebas who He was finally re-elected for a second term.

Aranzábal's candidacy did not bear fruit, since he did not obtain the eleven endorsements necessary to formalize his proposal. Three years later, Javier Tebas was once again president of the football association, on December 23, 2019, without opposition. An event that could be repeated on December 14, if there is no complaint or challenge to retain the appointment of Tebas as president of LaLiga for the fourth consecutive time.

Therefore, Tebas could already be in office on December 21, the day on which the ruling of the High Court of Justice of the European Union on the Super League will be made public. A competition of which the now provisional president of LaLiga has been against its creation and operation on the football planet.
