After a decade at the head of CE Mataró, Fran Seijo has decided to step aside and leave the presidency, according to Mundo Deportivo (MD). Personal circumstances, in addition to the complex situation the club is experiencing, have precipitated his departure. José Castillo, who until now was the treasurer, has stayed in his place.
The resignation coincides with criticism from a group of partners who have revealed alleged irregularities such as the lack of calls to partners and financial irregularities, alleging that "accounts have not been presented since 2019." In addition, they highlight that the first week of March, the club's secretary, Juanjo Almansa, who cited "lack of time to dedicate himself" and the treasurer, Luís Calzada, resigned.
“I decided to leave because it was affecting my health. This year has been very complicated and the stress and anxiety levels were no longer adequate. The doctor advised me to stay away and so I did. This is something to enjoy and have a good time, always taking into account your responsibility, but now it was already harming me,” former president Fran Seijo explains to MD.
The 2023/2024 season is being a very complicated season, especially in the most visible part, the first team, which plays in group 1 of the Primera Catalana. Seijo reviews the eventful journey that has been experienced until reaching the current situation, in which Mataró is in relegation positions and has difficulty remaining.
In statements to MD Seijo explained that “this season a representation company entered that had an investor. They brought in his coach, Jesús Barón, but things didn't work out. Afterwards, Elifaz, who was the goalkeeping coach, along with Jordi Muñoz, who acted as second, took the reins, but it didn't work out either. Toni Romero was the third attempt, and it didn't go well. And now Mario López and Álex Cordón, who were part of the squad, have taken charge of the team. "They have had the courage to put the team on their backs, when it would have been easy to leave."
But not everything has been bad in these 10 years of presidency. Fran Seijo highlights how “the number of athletes in the club has almost doubled” or “the empowerment that women's football has had”, as well as “the good relationship and collaboration with other clubs in the city”.
The former president of Mataró proudly wanted to highlight that “the beauty of this is that since my decision was known, many people have called me, many presidents. I will have also done something well.”
