Jorge Martín Montenegro, 'Tucho', a prominent Spanish-Argentine cyclist, died this weekend at his home at the age of 40, as confirmed by the Galician Cycling Federation. ‘Tucho’ Montenegro competed professionally for Andalucía-Caja Sur (the team with which he raced the 2010 Vuelta a España) and Portuguese side Louletano. Until his death he continued to be active in the Elite category with CC Padronés Cortizo. He died suddenly at his home.

Montenegro was born on May 7, 1983 in Mar del Plata. Son of a cyclist, from an early age he showed his passion for cycling by participating at just 4 years old in his first race. He began his career in Spain in 2005, the year in which he became champion of Argentina under-23.

There he began a career of great success, among which the 2009 Spanish Cup stands out. That same year he won the Aitzondo Klasica, the Santikutz Klasica and the fifth stage of the Vuelta a Salamanca.

Already in 2016, Montenegro won the Spanish Elite Road Cycling Championship as an amateur, in addition to winning the Iberdrola trophy. In the 2010 Vuelta a España, which he raced with the Andalucía-CajaSur team, he participated in several escapes.

Montenegro settled in Spain and competed in the amateur category for many years, where he became a regular and essential figure for his sporting talent but also for his charisma. His death has been a hard blow to the world of amateur cycling.
