In the coming days, Spain faces a drastic change in climate, with the arrival of polar cold that marks a significant change in meteorological conditions. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this phenomenon is characterized by a significant drop in temperatures throughout the country, especially in the central and mountainous areas. This change coincides with the beginning of the month of December, a period traditionally associated with cold, but which this year seems to be exceptionally intense.
The Aemet has issued a yellow alert in several areas, warning that temperatures will drop significantly below the usual values for this time of year. Below zero temperatures have already been recorded in several cities such as León, Huesca and Cuenca, reaching minimum temperatures of up to -3ºC. This cold will be felt especially in the early hours of the morning and during the night.
In addition to the low temperatures, locally heavy rainfall is expected in western Galicia and the Canary Islands, although they will be widespread on Monday. The Aemet foresees intervals of strong wind on the Galician coast and in the western part of the Cantabrian mountain range. This change in weather will not only affect temperatures, but also wind and precipitation conditions in different parts of the country.
On the other hand, Aemet warns of possible frosts, which could be especially intense in the Pyrenees. In areas such as Baqueira Beret, temperatures of up to -12ºC have been recorded, which represents a completely winter environment. This scenario is favorable for snow sports fans, who could enjoy optimal conditions sooner than expected.
But the weather situation is far from stabilizing. Meteored predicts that, after the passage of an Atlantic front, cloudiness will increase in Galicia and progressively extend towards the southeast. The second half of next week will bring more intense showers in the northwest of the peninsula, especially in western Galicia.
The panorama will be completed with the arrival of an atmospheric river that will connect the Caribbean with the peninsula through the Atlantic, bringing with it higher temperatures and increased humidity. This phenomenon could lead to intense rainfall starting in the second half of the week, coinciding with the long weekend, marking an important contrast with the current cold and dry environment.
