Return to winter weather for a few days with temperatures typical of late February or early March and rain throughout the country, which could be widespread during the weekend, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
For the next few hours, the drop in thermometers is expected to continue in points in the north and center of the peninsula. The fall will range between 5 and 10 degrees below normal for this time of year.
This situation, the agency points out, is a consequence of the emergence of an arctic air mass throughout the peninsula and the Balearic Islands due to the joint action of an anticyclone in the northwest of Europe and a storm over the western and central Mediterranean.
For today, frost is expected in mountain areas and also in wide swaths of the northern plateau and moors in the central area: Teruel will drop to 2 degrees below zero, like other provincial capitals such as Palencia, León, Cuenca, Burgos or Avila. Added to this cold is the wind, which will leave gusts close to 90-100 kilometers per hour.
In the rest of the country, slightly cloudy skies and a north wind that will continue to blow with intensity and increase the feeling of cold accompanied by temperatures that in the southern half will be 24 or 25 degrees in Badajoz and Córdoba, while in a good part of the North will remain below 15 degrees.
In addition, it will rain in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, the Pyrenees and points of the Alto Ebro, with snowfall above about 1,000 meters and an unstable environment in the peninsular Mediterranean and in the Balearic Islands, with stormy showers.
Wednesday will dawn again with cold and frost in the mountains, on the northern plateau and in the central moors, but already in the central hours of the day there will be a recovery in temperatures of up to 5 degrees compared to those of the previous day, especially in the northern half and in the Mediterranean area.
Starting on Friday and looking ahead to the weekend, according to the Aemet forecast, the most likely scenario foresees the arrival of fronts associated with storms to the peninsula, which will leave rain in many places. The areas with the most probability of precipitation will be the north and west of the peninsula, although it could also rain in the center, the Pyrenees, Catalonia and the eastern part of the peninsula.
For the last days of the week, temperatures are expected to recover, with values typical for the time of year, the agency concludes.
