Storm Juan has burst into Spain with enormous force, changing the country's climate panorama. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a series of warnings that affect almost the entire national territory. Thus, during this weekend temperatures plummet, the wind intensifies and the snow falls heavily.
Winter, which seemed to have been forgotten in some areas, has returned with an icy vengeance starring Juan. The situation is clear: this storm, although it will be brief, will leave important consequences on the Spanish climate.
After an unusually warm period in areas such as the Mediterranean, with temperatures above 20ºC, the last few days have marked a drastic turn towards what would be typical January weather. In this way, the train of storms - Hipólito, Irene and now Juan - has left an indelible trace in the country. And it will continue in this line.
But what exactly does this sudden arrival of the cold mean? To begin with, minimum temperatures of -14ºC are approaching in the Iberian region of Soria. In parallel, red and orange warnings dot the map of Spain, with snow accumulations of up to 20 centimeters in places such as Soria, Ávila or Segovia. The rest of the Castilian-Leonese area is not far behind. Segovia and Burgos, with temperatures close to -10ºC, are also on alert.
Meanwhile, the south of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands register cloudy skies and light rains. In the north, initially clear skies, but they will become cloudy at the end of Saturday, January 20, especially in Galicia. In the Canary Islands, occasional rainfall is expected in the north of the most prominent islands.
Snow and ice are not the only protagonists; Strong winds are also expected. In the Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran, westerly winds are expected, while in the Mediterranean, strong gusts from the north are expected. The Canary Islands are not spared, with strong trade winds.
