On New Year's Eve, a sudden storm puts a damper on party plans in Spain, with an Atlantic front that moves quickly from west to east, and that will bring heavy showers in some regions of the country.
While most of the country enjoys the last stable night of 2023, areas such as Galicia and the eastern Cantabrian Sea will receive significant rainfall. This rapid meteorological change, predicted by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet)
Although the Atlantic front arrived in Galicia on Saturday, December 30, it was expected to move fairly quickly, affecting several areas during December 31. Thus, this front brings with it showers that will mainly affect Galicia, the eastern part of the Pyrenees, the northern plateau and the Alto Ebro on Sunday morning.
Despite the meteorological instability caused by the express storm, the rest of the Peninsula will generally maintain stable weather conditions, similar to those recorded the previous day.
In addition to the rain, strong winds are expected in Galicia and Cantabria, with waves that could reach between five and seven meters. However, in the rest of the country there will only be cloudy intervals without precipitation, so the last night of the year will be mostly dry, except for frost in high mountain areas. These areas, including towns such as Lleida and Ávila, will face sub-zero temperatures, which will contrast with the 21°C expected in Malaga.
The Aemet has also warned that January 1, 2024 will be marked by cloudy skies throughout the Peninsula, with continuous rain in the northwest, maintaining the meteorological trend observed during the weekend.
