In recent weeks, the residents of Baix Penedès have witnessed an invasion of bed bugs that have congregated on the Calafell promenade, especially at night and in illuminated areas. From streetlights to vehicles, insects have been noticeable and have caused concern among the local population.

According to local authorities, this is a variety of bed bugs found in trees and that, due to changes in temperature, is attracted to light and seeks refuge in warmer places, such as buildings. Although this plague is expected to be punctual and short-lived, preventive measures have been taken, such as urging citizens to close doors and windows, especially at night and if there is light inside the homes, to prevent the entry of pests. these insects in buildings and prevent the formation of colonies.

Some residents have reported the isolated presence of bed bugs in their homes, taking measures to combat them. Despite initial concern, recent rain and gusts of wind are expected to contribute to the decline of the pest in the coming days.

The appearance of this species of bed bugs dates back to its accidental introduction in the United States in 1998, arriving in Europe in 2007. In Catalonia, its first date dates back to 2016 on the campus of the University of Girona. This polyphagous pest has been associated with a wide variety of plants and crops, and its proliferation has been a cause of concern for both authorities and residents of the region.
