Sumar recovers the granting of Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born before 1976

The Sumar parliamentary group has registered this Thursday in Congress a bill to urge Congress to grant Spanish nationality to those Sahrawis born under the Spanish administration of the territory before February 26, 1976.

This is an initiative very similar to the one taken into consideration by the Lower House last February at the request of Unidas Podemos and in which the PSOE opposed and went ahead with the votes of the PP and with the abstention of Vox. However, this initiative declined weeks later due to the proximity of the early general elections called on July 23.

Reformulated the coalition government, the confederal space led by Yolanda Díaz hopes to achieve this time the support of the socialists - who opposed a few months ago because they did not agree with the procedure proposed by Unidas Podemos - despite the fact that they then indicated that They agreed that "there is a grievance of the Sahrawi people with respect to other communities such as Equatorial Guinea."

In this sense, the deputy of Sumar for IU, Enrique Santiago, has assured that "this law is going to move forward" and in addition to waiting for the support of the PP like the last time, he also hopes to have the favorable vote of the PSOE, since The proposal has been communicated and they have not received "any contrary statement."

The formation has insisted that Spain has to lead the "support for the Sahrawi people" and prioritize it in "the agenda for this legislature", which seeks to "create the best conditions" for the population of Western Sahara, according to the former representative of Spain. at the UN, Agustín Santos Maraver.
