Juanjo Ferreiro, one of the founders of the PSC, dies

The Catalan politician Juanjo Ferreiro, one of the founders of the PSC, has died today at the age of 79. Ferreiro served as a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia during the first legislature of democracy and, later, he was a councilor for the Barcelona City Council. In a brief statement, the socialist formation has lamented the death of the politician, whose connection he has highlighted with the world of workers and neighborhood activism.

Born in Lugo in 1944, Juanjo Ferreiro, who came from the Socialist Convergence of Catalonia, was one of the founders of the PSC in 1978. Between 1980 and 1984 he was a deputy in the Catalan chamber, after the recovery of democracy, under the leadership of Joan You burst. In the municipal elections of 1983 he entered as councilor in Barcelona, in a City Council led by Pasqual Maragall. Until 1995 he served as president of the Municipal Council of the Nou Barris district. In 2005, the Barcelona City Council awarded him the city's Medal of Honor for the impulse of Nou Barris.

Several leaders of the PSC have lamented the death of Juanjo Ferreiro, such as the Minister of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, who has vindicated the figure of the former deputy, who "helped to build socialist unity in Catalonia".

Messages of condolences have also been added by the mayor of the PSC in Barcelona, Jaume Collboni. The candidate has assured in a tweet that Ferreiro "left a great mark as a councilor in Nou Barris, where he contributed to municipal decentralization and to improving the quality of life of residents." The deputy in Parliament Ferran Pedret has also highlighted his anti-Franco militancy and his participation in the labor movement.
