ERC loses more than 27,000 votes in Maresme

In the Maresme region, 338,614 people could vote in these last municipal elections, of which only 52.74% have exercised their right to vote, which has meant an increase in abstention of 12.19%. An apathy that has especially punished what was the first regional force, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, which has lost 27,583 votes and 57 councilors out of the 158 it had.

The PSC has also lost 7,990 votes in the region but the distribution, according to the electoral law, has benefited it with six more councillors, up to 94, for which it is now the first political force with 40,994 votes. In parallel, Junts per Catalunya-Compromís Municipal (JxCat-CM) has become the second regional formation with 36,933 votes, with an increase of 4,589 votes and 128 councilors, 34 more than in the previous elections.

The irruption of right-wing forces such as the PP has been remarkable in the Maresme, which has added 5,627 more votes compared to the previous municipal elections, which has allowed them to reach 26 councilors after overcoming the fall of 2019, recovering representation in various municipalities such as Mataró (2), Alella (2), Arenys de Mar (1), Calella, Canet, Dosrius, Malgrat de Mar, Pineda de Mar, Santa Susanna, Tiana, and the two Vilassars. Vox, on the other hand, has obtained 7,193 votes with six councilors, of which four remain in Mataró in the candidacy of Mònica Lora.

In the region, the first contacts have already begun to be made with the government of the Regional Council, which this mandate has led ERC under the presidency of Damià del Clot. They tie nine regional councilors JxCat-CM and the PSC, which claims the merit of having more votes since Junts lost a representative at the last moment in favor of PDeCat. ERC remains with eight and the PP enters with two directors, after its current non-assigned representative, Francesc Guillem, kept the record as non-assigned.

On this occasion, in the region there have been five town councils in which the force with the most votes has obtained an absolute majority that will allow them to govern alone. In Arenys de Mar, Estanis Fors (JxCat) has reached nine councilors against all odds and has taken advantage of the Annabel Moreno (ERC) debacle that has gone from six to two councilors. In Cabrera de Mar, the young JxCat candidate, Óscar Fernández, has risen to eight councilors (4 in 2019) in the face of the fall of the Republicans, who have been left without representation.

In Premià de Dalt, Josep Triadó has repeated the majority, with 10 councilors (1). Joan Campolier (AISS-JxCat) has done the same in Santa Susanna, repeating six representatives. Also new in Pineda de Mar, where the socialist Xavier Amor has increased his majority to 13 elected (1). But the great surprise of the region has, without a doubt, been the overwhelming result of Laura Martínez Portell in Vilassar de Mar with nine councilors (4 in 2019) who will govern at pleasure in the place of the president of the Regional Council, Damià del Clot, who it doesn't show up again.

Other results that draw attention for leaving open the possibility of a change of government is Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, where the Republican mayor, Nani Mora, has lost five councilors out of the nine who had this mandate. ERC has also fallen to four councilors in Teià, where Andreu Bosch, who does not appear again, had eight councilors. Also significant is the Republican defeat in Caldes d'Estrac, where they went from five to two representatives and in El Masnou, where the hegemony of mayor Jaume Oliveres is threatened by losing three of the nine elected officials he had.

In Canet de Mar, the Republican Jordi Llobet has not managed to revalidate the five councilors and has kept three. The ascent of the socialist Marian Gómez stands out in this town, with four councilors, who has won the elections with 22.16% of the votes, despite the technical tie in councilors with the independents of Canetencs until now ERC government partners. In Pineda de Mar, despite the overwhelming majority of the PSC, the deputy to the Parliament, Mònica Palacín, has not managed to revalidate the seven representatives and has remained in four. And where the biggest surprise came was in the small town of Òrrius, where ERC has lost the majority (from 6 to 3) in favor of JxCat (4) with a mayor, Xavier Masgrau, a former councilor from Arenys de Mar.

For its part, the PSC has lost representatives in Arenys de Munt (1), Malgrat de Mar (from 8 to 5), Mataró (from 13 to 11), Premià de Dalt (from 2 to 1) and Vilassar de Dalt (from 2 to 1). On the other hand, JxCat-CM also had four electoral spots in Sant Cebrià de Vallalta (from 2 to 1), the same result as in Tiana and Vilassar (from 4 to 3). Sant Vicenç de Montalt deserves special mention, where former mayor Javier Sandoval (PSC) has been declared the winner and the tandem of Amadeu Clofent and Robert Subirón has failed miserably, losing three of the four councilors.

Identical losses of more than 3,600 votes have been suffered by the municipal formations of the CUP and En Comú Podem. The independentistas have lowered five councilors out of the 23 they had in Maresme, just like the purple formation led by Sebastián Tejada in the Regional Council, who in Calella has become the only representative compared to the three he had.
