Badalona will use the 180,000 liters of the damaged pipe

The Badalona City Council is not prepared to wait for Aigües Ter Llobregat (ATLL) to carry out the repair work on the pipeline that connects the Ter a Cardedeu water treatment plant with the Trinitat treatment plant, which wastes around 180,000 liters of water every day water that goes directly to the sewer. As announced yesterday by the mayor, Xavier Garcia Albiol, the Consistory will build a new 70-meter channel that will allow the water that is now wasted to be diverted to a municipal tank where the trucks that deal with irrigation are supplied of parks and gardens and road cleaning.

Mayor Albiol yesterday openly showed his mistrust with the fact that ATLL fulfills the commitment to repair the leak between the years 2025 and 2026, as stated by the company in view of the neighborhood protests. The works entail great complexity and would have an approximate cost of 30 million euros. "I don't have confidence in ATLL and that's why we recover the water in our municipality" admitted the popular mayor yesterday.

In 2008, a huge loss of water began to be detected around the Masia de Can Codina, a property in the Serra de Marina, from where a water leak was located that for more than 15 years has lost water non-stop and that neighborhood complaints have not been able to stop.

Every two seconds more than two liters are wasted in the Canyet neighborhood, where water circulates through an open drain and is lost in the sewers, a fact that for the mayor of Badalón "is an offense to the citizens who are being claimed for savings measures due to the drought". He recognizes that the repair of the leak was one of the priorities of the municipal government that has presided over it since May.

The works to reuse the water will be carried out on private land and are expected to be completed in less than 15 days. Albiol could not specify the cost of the pipeline yesterday, but stated that it is acceptable for the municipal coffers. "In three months we will have solved 95% of a problem that has been going on for 20 years" pointed out the mayor.

For the concessionaire Aigües Ter Llobregat, losing 180,000 liters of water a day in a channel through which 4,000 liters pass per second is a trifle. On the other hand, for the residents of Canyet it is a "shameful" expense, as the neighborhood association once complained to the courts.

The ATLL pipeline was built in the 1960s and is in a very poor state of preservation. In addition, to repair the leak, it would be necessary to cut off the supply that supplies the city of Barcelona and the metropolitan area. That is why the decision is to build a new conduit and leave the current one out of service. The split was already planned by the Catalan Water Agency, but it never materialized.
